Koh Lanta: Paradise in South Thailand

Koh Lanta is situated approx. 75 km south of Krabi, the capital of Krabi Province. The Lanta Islands consist of Lanta Noi (small Lanta) and Lanta Yai (big Lanta) and are situated in the Andaman Sea. These islands have to this day, being spared from mass tourism. The existing tourism is concentrated at the West Coast of Lanta Yai.

The main island Lanta Yai is 27 km in length and traversed by a mountain range which is still covered by virgin rain forest. The islands southern tip together with 15 offshore islands was declared a national park in 1990 which covers an area of 134 sqkm.

The population of the Lanta district is about 20,000 people including a small community of Choa Le (Sea Gypsies). Wildlife is limited to some smaller mammals like monkeys, iguanas, snakes and over 100 bird species.

Koh Lanta is served by the new Krabi Airport, as well as the Trang Airport and Phuket International Airport. Train access is from Trang Station.

How to get to Koh Lanta:

From Krabi Airport:

• By Airport Limousine directly to Lanta.
• By Taxi or Minibus to Krabi town.

From Krabi:

• By Boat from the Pier or by Minibus
• By Car or Bike follow Highway No. 4 south direction Trang for 45 km then turn right (Sign. Koh Lanta) for 28 km to Car Ferry. Then 8 km through Lanta Noi you arrive at the 2nd Car Ferry to Lanta Yai.

From Trang:

• By Minibus (opp. Railway Station)
• By Car or Bike Highway No. 4, north, direction Krabi.
• Do not take the first indication left to Lanta (Bo Muang Pier, no Car Ferry). Do take the second left turn indicated Koh Lanta.

From Phuket:

• Take road transport to Krabi, or
• Boat to Phi Phi and change to Boat for Koh Lanta (Oct.- Apr.)

From Phi Phi

• Take Boat to Koh Lanta.

Koh Lanta  liegt  ca. 75 km südlich von Krabi, der Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen Provinz. Koh Lanta besteht aus den Inseln Lanta Noi (kl.Lanta) und Lanta Yai (gr. Lanta), welche vom Andaman Meer umspült werden. Die Inseln sind bis jetzt vom Massentourismus verschont geblieben. Der bestehende Tourismus konzentriert sich auf die Westküste von Lanta Yai.

Die Hauptinsel Lanta Yai ist 27 km lang und von einem Gebirge durchzogen, das noch von natürlichem Regenwald bewachsen ist. Die Südspitze der Insel,zusammen mit 15 kleineren Inseln, wurde 1990 zum Nationalpark erklärt, der eine Fläche von 134 Quadratkilometern bedeckt.

Die Bevölkerung des Lanta Distrikts bemisst sich auf ca. 20 000 Einwohner, inklusive eines kleinen Stammes von Seezigeunern. Die Tierwelt beschränkt sich auf kleinere Tiere wie Affen,Iguanas, Schlangen und über 100 Vogelarten.

Koh Lanta wird durch den neuen Flughafen von Krabi bedient, sowie auch durch die Flughäfen von Trang und Phuket.

Für  Bahnreisende ist der Bahnhof Trang der Ausstiegsort.

Vom  Flughafen   Krabi:

• mit dem Taxi direkt nach Lanta
• mit dem Taxi oder Minibus nach Krabi Stadt.
  

Von Krabi

• per Boot vom Pier, oder per Minibus
• per Auto oder Motorrad, Highway Nr.4 südlich, Richtung Trang, ca. 45 km dann rechts abbiegen, (sign. Koh Lanta) 28 km bis zur Autofähre, 8 km durch Lanta Noi zur 2. Autofähre nach Lanta Yai.

Von Trang

• per Minibus (gegenüber Bahnhof)
• per Auto oder Motorrad,Highway No.4 nördlich Richtung Krabi.Nicht die erste sign.Abzweigung nach Lanta nehmen (Bo Muang Pier hat keine Autofähre)Nehmen Sie die 2.sign.Abzweigung (links) nach Koh Lanta (ca. 45 km vor Krabi)

Von Phuket

• nehmen Sie Strassentransport nach Krabi,oder
• Boot nach der Insel Phi Phi,dort umsteigen,nach Koh Lanta (Okt-Apr.)
